Finding out that you are being prescribed glasses or contacts to wear for an unknown period of time can be a nightmare for most people. Caring for glasses or contacts isn’t easy and for most newly prescribed people, it is unnerving­. However, being tested for weak eyes means that you have not really been looking after your eyes earlier, which got you to this point.

Number#1- Wear Sunglasses

Too much exposure to the sun means too much exposure to Ultra Violet (UV) rays. Now you might not feel it happening, but UV rays constantly keep pressurizing and damaging your eyes, the entire time you are in the sun. This increases the chances of weakening your vision, along with the probabilities of developing problems like cataracts and macular degeneration.

When you go to purchase sunglasses, be sure to get the ones, which block 99% to 100% UVA and UVB rays. Sunglasses with wraparound lenses also provide great protections from the sides.

Number#2-Use Safety Eyewear

If your nature of work requires you to work in hazardous environments where there is a lot of airborne debris, be sure you wear protective eyewear. Preferably, use safety eyewear at home too when doing things like using power tools to cut wood or cleaning up dust so that your eyes stay safe and protected.

Number#3-Don’t Look At the Computer For Hours

We all know how constantly looking at the computer screen for hours can gradually deteriorate eyesight. Concentrating on a bright computer screen puts a lot of strain on your eyes, causing problems like dried up eyes, itching, blurry vision which later require you to get glasses or lenses.

Be sure to look away from the computer after every few minutes, also consider positioning the screen slightly lower than your head so that you don’t have to keep raising your eyes to look. Optometrists also advise using an anti-glare screen to ensure maximum eye protection.

Number#4-The Food You Eat Affects Your Vision

Nutrients such as Omega-3 fatty acids, zinc, lutein, vitamins C and E help maintain a strong vision and also minimize the risks of problems like macular degeneration and cataracts. Be sure that you eat lots of green vegetables, fishes like salmon and tuna, eggs and fruits like oranges and other citrus fruits so that your vision stays healthy.


Number#5-Quit Smoking

Smoking is one of the most common reasons behind optic nerve damage, macular degeneration, and cataracts, in adults. If you have been smoking for a long time, it is time to quit. Studies show that smokers who frequently try to quit are more likely to quit than those who don’t try at all.

Apart from these tips, visiting your eye doctor regularly is also a great way to ensure that you will not need the help of glasses or contacts in the future to fine-tune your vision.
